What If God Wrote A Letter?
If a letter were delivered to your mailbox addressed to you, postmarked from Heaven, and signed with the hand of God, what would you do with it? Would you tuck it away in a safe place, or would you rip open the envelope immediately? Would you read pages 2, 34, and 100 and consider yourself educated on all God has to say, or would you devour each page from beginning to end?
God did write such a letter to each of his children. It is called the Bible. Within its pages God reveals his history of interacting with humanity, and his plan for interacting with you on a personal level. He reveals his mystery and awesome majesty. He tells you precisely how you can please him and gives you guidance for overcoming those actions that displease him. He reveals the depth of his love for you, and promises never to leave you or forsake you. Most of all, he tells the story of how, once upon a time, the God of the universe entered the world in the person of Jesus Christ. On earth he suffered as no man has ever suffered and died a death we ourselves deserved, that we might have eternal life.
Just as we need constant physical nourishment, so we also need constant spiritual nourishment. The Bible is the platter from which we ought to feast. Going to church, watching Christian TV, and reading Christian books are good things. But all doctrine must be tested with scripture.
In His infinite wisdom, God has left us a written record rather than a verbal record. We don’t have to rely on hearsay or feelings. Whatever you believe about God and spiritual issues, believe it because you have read the Bible for yourself.
You would be hurt if you wrote a special letter to a loved one and that person didn’t bother to read it or never finished it. When we make time to read and study God’s word, we show him that we want to get to know him better and that we care about what he has to say to us. When we don’t make time, we send the opposite message–and in the process we hurt the God who desires to have an intimate relationship with us.
So go grab your Bible, God’s personal letter to you, and immerse yourself in its life-changing words.
